Enquire and discuss
Understand your options, the process, timelines and costs by checking out our website, F and/or your service provider (electrician, builder, whose costs you will pay).
Some of the information you'll need before you apply includes:
- Bill payer contact details (the quote and invoice for any works completed will be sent to this person).
- Your electrician's details (if applicable)
- Technical information relating to what you need to connect and how (how much capacity is required - phases / fusing).
Apply and explore
Complete your application online or engage with your service provider, who will apply for your connection (e.g., if you are upgrading your existing connection or need power to your boundary). If you need power to your boundary, it's a good time to think about whether you would also like to switch the electricity on. You can request a builder's temporary supply or permanent connection at the same time as completing your standard connection application.
We complete a high-level review of your application within 10 working days and may request more information.
Design and approve
We'll assess your connection requirements and confirm what work is needed to make an electricity connection available. Where needed, we work with you and/or your service provider to design and tailor the solution, ensuring it meets your requirements.
Key steps are to review and approve the proposed plan, costs and/or agreement before proceeding.
You will usually be supplied with a Quote within 15 working days for a standard connection. Once you have accepted the Quote, we will send you out our Works Agreement and provide information on our Customer Terms & Conditions. Our Works Agreement sets out the capital works and terms on which we are offering to undertake the work.
You need to sign the Works Agreement within 30 working days of receiving this or the offer will lapse and a new Quote and Works Agreement will be required.
Deliver and build
Construction of your service main (private line/ cable) can be done by your electrician. Your electrician will advise you on what's required, how they will deliver the work and any costs they may charge you.
If there is work needed on our network to get you connected, we will deliver the agreed solution to get power to your boundary or designated connection point. This work begins after you accept the Quote and sign the Works Agreement. In general, we will commence physical work on site within 8 - 12 weeks of the acceptance of the Works Agreement.
We aim to complete most work on site within 4 weeks.
Connect and complete
When a standard connection is completed, you'll have power available at your requested connection point (this could be at the boundary of your property, pump, shed, etc).
If you have requested a permanent or builder's temporary connection, we'll work with you, your chosen electricity retailer and your service provider to get the power switched on.
If your electrician is completing work, they will certify your service main and organise for us to inspect and liven the connection. We can generally do this within 15 working days (once we have received all the required paperwork). At this point, your energy retailer will begin billing you for your electricity.
For subdivisions, once power is available we will issue any documentation required to fulfil regulatory requirements (for example: 224 certification).
FAQ
My standard connection is more complex than a standard house or business, what should I do?
We have a different connection process for complex connections, which involves more details and ensures we will have capacity on the network to support your needs. You can learn more about complex connections here.
How long will it take to get connected?
How long it will take will depend on how much work is required to enable your connection (e.g. its size and complexity), and the availability of service providers to do your work.
For a standard connection:
a) We will perform a high-level review of your initial application and contact you within 10 working days.
b) We will send you a quote within 15 working days.
c) After you accept the quote and sign our works agreement, work will generally commence within 8 - 12 weeks.
d) Once we are advised that the service is ready to connect and be inspected, you can expect to have your electricity connected (switched on and ready to use) within 15 working days.
Note: 15 working days is the expected timeframe once all documentation from your electricity retailer and electrician has been provided.
Do charges apply for capacity upgrades?
In order to cover this cost, we have to charge for all capacity increases. This fee contributes towards any network upgrade work that may be required as a result of the specific capacity increase, or other capacity increase in the future. In this way, no single customer ends up being charged for the entire cost of a network upgrade, but rather, the cost is spread across all customers who will benefit. When you apply to upgrade your capacity, we'll work with you to understand what you need and from there, determine a cost and issue a quote.
What information will I need to get power to my property?
Other than your contact details, there are several pieces of information that you will require to get a power service installed to your property and include in your (or your service providers) enquiry or application. For standard connections these are typically:
- Property address. This is the address of the property where you would like the service installed.
- Lot or Deposited Plan (DP) number. If you don’t have an address yet, then a Lot or DP number will be fine.
- What the connection is for. We need to know if this is for a residential dwelling or a commercial operation.
- Capacity required.
In general, we recommend your service provider (electrician) complete the form on your behalf, so they can provide any technical information required.
Why would I need to increase my capacity?
The need to increase capacity is quite common for farms, small commercial and larger customers where you introduce new loads (e.g. new building, new equipment, significant Electric Vehicle charging).
It is not common for residential customers adding typical household appliances or a single EV. However if you are thinking about substantial new loads such as altering the heating source within your home (e.g., going from a log burner to multiple heat pumps), discuss with your electrician if you may need to increase your capacity in order to meet the added demand of such appliances. Your electrician will be able to advise you on what will be required. For more information on changing an existing power supply, click here.
