Poles on your property
Usually, any electrical assets inside your property boundary are owned by the property owner. This includes:
- Power lines and poles
- Underground cables
- Power boxes
In these cases, the property owner is responsible for all management and maintenance (and associated costs) of these assets. There are some variations to this ownership rule. For example, EA Networks owns all transformers, regardless of where they are located (including private property).
If you're unsure, or would like to confirm, who owns the lines or other electrical assets on your property, please contact us on 0800 430 460 to discuss.
Line inspections
EA Networks completes 5 yearly inspections of all electrical assets, including those on private property. During these inspections, we assess the condition and safety of all electrical infrastructure to ensure it meets required standards and can operate safely. We will always share our findings with you for the assets that are your responsibility.
If, during an inspection, we identify a pole that is unsafe and has an EA Networks transformer on it, we will contact the property owner to arrange an upgrade of the pole.
EA Networks will pay for the upgrade in return for taking over ownership of the pole. All other electrical assets on the property (excluding the upgraded pole and the transformer) will remain in the ownership of the property owner.
You can find out more about our line inspections here.
Ownership of shared lines
EA Networks is in the process of taking over ownership of shared lines.
Where we identify during an inspection that there are electrical lines and cables on private property that supply more than one property, we will contact the property owners to arrange a transfer of ownership of the electrical lines and cables that are shared, to EA Networks.
EA Networks will then be responsible for the ongoing maintenance and future upgrade of the transferred electrical assets.
