Our services
From new connections to undergrounding, we deliver safe, reliable electricity and fibre solutions across Mid Canterbury.
Earthing services
Proper earthing is critical for electrical safety. We offer earthing assessments and installations to ensure your property is safely grounded. Whether you're building a new home or upgrading an existing system, our team can help you meet safety standards and protect your electrical equipment.
Overhead to underground conversions
Looking to improve the look and safety of your property or neighbourhood? We can help convert overhead power lines to underground systems. Our team will guide you through the process, from planning and approvals to installation and final connection.
Line maintenance
Keeping the power flowing safely and reliably is our top priority. Our line maintenance services include regular inspections and repairs of all lines within the Mid-Canterbury area. This includes lines on private property. We are available to provide routine maintenance or emergency response. If you're concerned about any lines on your property or our network, please contact us.
Safety inspection of your line
Safety is non-negotiable. We conduct scheduled safety inspections on power lines and equipment within the Mid-Canterbury area to identify potential risks before they become issues. These proactive checks help prevent outages, reduce fire risk, and ensure compliance with safety standards. If you’re concerned about a line on or near your property or would like us to inspect privately owned lines and cables, please contact us.
Fault repair services
EA Networks provides a 24/7 fault dispatch service, responding to outages promptly to minimise downtime and ensure qualified personnel handle all necessary repairs.
Outages can occur due to numerous factors, including wildlife or vegetation interference, physical damage to network equipment, and power quality issues. When we attend outages, we investigate and determine the cause of each fault.
The cost for the fault repair service is funded by the party that owns the assets where the fault originated. Landowners own and are responsible for electricity cables, conductors, and poles located on their property. If the fault is found to have originated from private property electrical assets, the fault response service and any additional repair costs will be charged to the landowner.
If a cause cannot be established, the fault is classified as a network fault. There is no charge to any third party where the fault originates on the public network.
EA Networks will make reasonable efforts to notify landowners that charges may be incurred for the fault response and repair. However, fault dispatch needs to proceed even if contact cannot be made. In all cases, we will notify the landowner after the event, inform them of the fault cause, and advise them of any charges that we will invoice.
For faults that occur on private property, our fault response fee is $250 + GST. Any additional work will be quoted and charged accordingly.
Cable locations
Whether you're a homeowner wanting to lay a new driveway or a contractor installing new pipes along a street, you should always check underground cables before you start any new project. This can help ensure that not only will you avoid damaging underground power services, but you can also help ensure the safety of anyone working on your project.
Examples of projects which require cable location services:
- Road or footpath restoration works
- Maintenance on existing underground assets
- Designing or building new underground assets
- Building a new fence
- Laying a new driveway
- New subdivision or development planning
- Cultivation of a paddock (underground lines can often be found under rural land, particularly if close to roads).
Before You Dig is a free online service which enables you to obtain information on the location of cables, pipes and other utility assets in and around any proposed dig site. You can find out more at beforeudig.co.nz.
EA Networks also offers onsite, accurate cable location services to help you avoid damaging power lines, which can be dangerous and costly. Contact us on 0800 430 460 to discuss your needs before you dig – it's quick, easy and could save lives.
Temporary safety disconnections
When work needs to be carried out near power lines at your home, business or farm, a temporary safety disconnection helps ensure everyone stays safe while the job is completed.
Why get a temporary safety disconnection?
In some situations, it’s best to get the power switched off; these can include:
- When completing maintenance work on your property that requires you to work near power lines
- When trimming trees near power lines (we suggest getting support from a qualified professional when trees are near lines)
- For construction projects where electrical safety is a concern
- In emergency situations where immediate disconnection is necessary to prevent hazards.
Arranging a temporary safety disconnection
In most cases it’s free to have your power disconnected between Monday and Friday 8am – 5pm, as long as you give us three working days' notice. To arrange your safety disconnection, call us on 0800 430 460. You’ll need to provide the following information:
- Your name and address
- Connection point details. This is your ICP (Installation Control Point) number. You can find this on your electricity bill or by searching via your address here.
- Date and time you’d like the power to be disconnected
- Date and time you’d like the power to be switched back on.
If you’re doing tree work around your property that involves power lines, contact our vegetation access coordinator:

Urgent safety disconnections
If you need a safety disconnection urgently, after hours or on a weekend or public holiday, give us a call on 0800 430 460 for a chat. We’ll need to assess your situation and work with you to provide help as soon as possible. Please note that safety disconnections of this nature will incur a charge, which will be discussed with you when you call us.
Turning the power back on
If electrical work has been carried out, we may need to see an electrical certificate of compliance from your electrician before we can turn the power back on. We may also be required to complete an inspection. However, this will be discussed with you when you call us.
Keeping safe
Home, business or farm maintenance can be a regular occurrence. While it might be tempting to do everything yourself, leaving electrical work to the experts is key to keeping you, your family and/or staff safe.
Before you think about any work that might involve electricity, give one of your local electricians a call, or call 0800 430 460 to speak with one of our friendly team.
