Trees near powerlines

Trees near power lines can cause unnecessary outages that impact the community. However, when a tree is near a power line, it's not as simple as getting out the chainsaw to fix the issue.

Key tips for staying safe

  • Use a professional arborist to trim your trees. When your tree is within 4 metres of a power line, you are required to use a qualified and approved utility arborist to trim your trees.
  • Request a temporary disconnection when you're doing maintenance near any electricity lines that run from your house to our network.
  • Stay clear of power lines when removing objects caught in a tree.
  • If a tree branch breaks off and lands on a power line, give us a call on 0800 430 460 for help.
  • Make sure children stay safe and don't climb trees that are anywhere near overhead power lines.
